My DVD/CD-RW gone weird!

Hello.
I am on Windows XP on a Sony VAIO laptop and I rushed into a weird problem.
Suddenly my CD-ROM [it is a DVD/CD-RW] device stopped from functioning normally. It is installed ok, drivers are ok, Windows know this CD-ROM and tells me CD-ROM is

ok, no any problem. But, no matter what CD I insert whether DVD, Audio CD, Soft CD or just CD recorded by me Windows doesn’t do anything, not even recognizes that a CD

unit was inserted. CD doesn’t autostart, but the worst is the Windows doesn’t even fill that a CD containing data was inserted, so, if I open CD-ROM manually it is empty.
I assume there is a problem in the registry only; at least I hope it is so. So, if there is a way to change something there to fix the problem, I would be vary glad to know that

I want to watch my good DVDs, help...
